African experience for Hunstanton's Michaela
IMAGES of children bedding down for the night on a cold, hard floor and enduring flies confronted beaver leader Michaela Dartford during a month volunteering in Ghanaian orphanages.
Children's home care worker Miss Dartford (28), of Hunstanton, followed a dream to join a volunteer scheme in the African country and was struck by the children's ability to draw strands of happiness out of their poverty-stricken existence.
First Hunstanton Beaver leader Miss Dartford said: "It was very, very eye opening. For them a little goes a long way, not just in terms of money, but they are just so happy for you being there, spending time with them and taking an interest.
"They don't know any different so when you are around them it is not all doom and gloom. At the time you are just living it and it is only when you come back it all really hits you. It does make you less materialistic and appreciate things more."
Miss Dartford worked in three separate orphanages as well as helping to build a school during her stay.
