Another teenager dies in walk home
A TEENAGER was killed after he was struck by a car while walking along the A10 at Hilgay in the early hours of Sunday.
The 18-year-old, who is believed to be from the Hilgay area, was walking along the Southery-bound carriageway when there was a collision with a red Honda Civic, which was travelling in the same direction, at around 1.30am.
The teenager suffered serious injuries in the collision, near the junction with Ely Road, and was taken to Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment but later died.
The collision in Hilgay is the fourth time a teenager has died while walking home in the early hours in the past three months.
Brian Hewitt, landlord of the Rose and Crown in Hilgay, told the Lynn News he hosted an 18th birthday party at his pub on Saturday night and has faced an agonising wait to see if the youngster involved was one of his guests.
He said: "We have been waiting all weekend to hear who he was.
"One of the customers called to tell me what happened on Sunday morning and everyone has been asking me who it is. We were shocked to hear about it and I automatically thought was he here last night?"
In December 17-year-olds Shaun Barnes and Luther Storr died on the railway line at St Germans when they were hit by an early-morning train bound for London's King's Cross Station.
It is believed the friends did not have enough money for a taxi to their Watlington homes and decided to walk the direct route from Lynn along the tracks.
And last Saturday 18-year-old student Jonathon Barber vanished from a five-strong group of friends as he walked along the banks of the River Great Ouse towards Downham after enjoying a party at Salters Lode.
His dead body was found in the river on Tuesday close to where he had last been seen.
Cllr Anthony White, West Norfolk Council member for Hilgay with Denver, was shocked to hear news of the latest incident but said it reinforced the dangers of walking along busy roads late at night.
He told the Lynn News: "I am concerned about using roadways and river banks at night times. We have got taxis and in general there are other modes of transport for getting home.
"With incidents like this, and the one on the railway line at St Germans, they think they are OK but the trouble is it is a job to spot people walking on the side."
Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a young man walking in the Hilgay area either late on Saturday or early on Sunday. Officers would also like to hear from anyone who saw the Honda Civic prior to the collision or who witnessed the incident itself.
Anyone with information should contact PC Chris Curtis, at Swaffham Road Policing Unit, on 0845 456 4567.
