Arctic adventure for Gaywood man

WHILE most people go in search of the sun during their winter breaks Gaywood man Greig Roye will be heading in the opposite direction to the sub-zero temperatures of the Arctic.

He will be part of a 17-man team which is raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association by trekking 70 kilometres a day for eight days at the end of February.

Each challenger will take charge of their very own team of huskies and will be responsible for feeding, harnessing and looking after the animals.

The adventure will take them across snow-covered mountains, through spectacular forests and over frozen lakes.

Each day they will face severe and unpredictable weather conditions while staying in basic self-sufficient lodges.

Mr Roye (32), of Thurlin Road, accepted the challenge as part of his family's ongoing efforts to support his sister Mandy Gamble, of Terrington St Clement, who was diagnosed with the fatal, neurological condition five years ago.

Since the diagnosis was made her family has been determined to raise as much money and awareness of the disease as possible.

Mr Roye told the Lynn News: "I have got six sisters and am the only boy, so they delegated this trip to me and, being the youngest, I did not really get a say in the matter.

"I think the worst thing about it will be being away from my partner. Other than that, I am really looking forward to it.

"It should be a fantastic experience, but I think I have picked the hardest one to do. Maybe next year I can go to the Sahara."

The trip is being organised through the MND Association but each challenger must raise a minimum of 3,995 in sponsorship.

The Arctic trek is one of a number of international fundraising challenges organised by the charity each year, which also include mountain walks in Kenya and a cycle ride from London to Reims, in France.

Mr Roye is already more than halfway towards his target thanks to a series of fundraising events such as bingo evenings, a race night and book sale.
