As price goes up thieving oiks are after your oil
RISING fuel prices have seen a spate of thefts of heating oil from premises across Norfolk and police are urging farms, businesses and householders to stay vigilant.
Since the start of this year there have been 36 such thefts reported in Norfolk and police have come up with some tank security advice for people storing heating oil.
Ensuring the tank is in a position where access to it is restricted when the premises are unoccupied will discourage some thieves, as they will want to get as near as possible to the tank.
Another preventative measure is to place the tank inside a steel container and lock the container, using high-security locks, and fitting an alarm. However, the owner needs to ensure the tank has adequate ventilation to prevent a build up of vapour.
Businesses can also consider placing the tank inside a locked and alarmed barn rather than outside, but again they need to ensure there is good ventilation.
“Securing the tank inside an area of palisade fencing and alarming the protected area is another method that could be used,” the police suggest.
Relocating the tank to a spot where it can be easily seen can also make a difference, as they are often hidden away round the back of premises.
A Norfolk Police spokesman said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen any recent theft of oil or with knowledge about such a crime.
“Anyone who might have seen any suspicious behaviour or vehicles should contact their local police station on 0845 456 4567, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
