ASHWICKEN: £3.5m sewerage scheme on cards

Villagers could be hooked up to mains sewers for the first time in a £3.5 million scheme - if councillors back the project next week.

Anglian Water wants to build three pumping stations in Ashwicken to connect 134 properties to the network.

West Norfolk Council’s planning committee, which meets in Lynn on Monday, has been recommended to approve applications to build two stations in Leziate Drove and Fen Lane.

The third does not need planning permission as it will be built on a grass verge and is classed as permitted development.

If approved, Anglian Water hopes to start work this summer.

A company spokesman said: “A total of 134 properties will be attached to the main sewage network for the first time which would be a big benefit.”

Anglian Water has a legal duty to provide a public sewer when the existing system could have an adverse effect on the local environment.

Officers’ report to the committee stated that the water company had received an application from a number of residents in Gosthorpe Manor as their septic tanks were not working effectively.

However, objections have been raised by Grimston parish council, which wants improvements to the network in the village, Gayton and Pott Row.

Five objection letters, including one signed by 25 people, have also been received.

These raise concerns including vehicle access to the effect on a nearby site of special scientific interest (SSSI).

But the officers’ report said: “The proposal would have minimal impact on the landscape, given its small scale. Subject to suitable planting, the visual impact of the scheme on the local environment is therefore viewed to be acceptable.

“No unreasonable harm should be caused from the development in terms of the amenities of neighbouring properties.

“Due to the distance of separation the proposal will not impact upon the SSSI. Of significant and overriding weight is the fact this development will impose foul drainage infrastructure in the area.”
