LYNNSPORT will be the starting point of the 1948 Olympic torch relay over the Jubilee weekend.

From June 2-5, the relay will cover around 170 miles, passing through 80 villages.

West Norfolk Council sports development officer, Tony Devenish, said: “Having the 1948 torch to do a relay around the villages of West Norfolk will bring the Olympic feeling to the Olympic year.”

There are 164 torch-bearers on foot and cycle who will carry the torch over the four-day event. These people, aged between 14 and over 60, have been nominated by their local communities.

“It gives the villagers a chance to get active and hopefully it will create an everlasting legacy.”

Elizabeth Nockolds supported this by saying: “It is a good exciting project to have in the borough before the real torch comes through the town.

“It is something very special to celebrate, especially as we will all be commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.”

She is a keen runner herself and added: “I take part in the 5K run at The Walks every Saturday morning and I know it will be lovely for people to run through the likes of Wootton and Castle Rising during the relay.”

Former Olympian Paul Evans and chief executive of West Norfolk Council Ray Harding will be the first to carry the torch from Lynnsport.

Paul Evans said: “It was a big honour for me when I was asked to start the relay. Hopefully it will inspire the young people of West Norfolk to get involved in the relay and sport in general.”

The 1948 torch trail is part of the Let’s Get Active 2012 Campaign.
