Awards go to special young citizens
OUTSTANDING achievements by young people were recognised and rewarded on Friday at the Downham Mayor's Young People's Award for Citizenship presentation night.
Some 90 youngsters from Hillcrest Primary School in Bexwell Road and 32 Clackclose Community Primary School in Nursery Road received a total of 122 certificates.
The town hall was packed for the ceremony which had been postponed from February because of heavy snow.
Among those receiving special awards were six-year-old Clackclose pupil Jordan Jackson who has atopic eczema.
His skin needs daily treatment but he is always cheerful and always helps others, said a school spokesman.
Jordan received a 10 WH Smith voucher from the town council, presented by town Mayor Mr John Leach.
Other special award winners, who also received 10 vouchers, included nine-year-old Morgan Masterson from Hillcrest who, born with one leg shorter than the other, has to go to hospital in Birmingham for operations.
Meanwhile, Dan Allen (ten) from Hillcrest helps look after his disabled brother Andy (12) and has also raised money for respite care by running.
Another special award recipient was Clackclose's Ashleigh Smith (11) who helped with fundraising for Children In Need and encouraged class members to take part.
The fifth award when to 3rd Downham Methodist Brownies for all the fundraising they do and for helping Mr Leach at special events.

Clackclose headteacher Mr Ronnie Koon said: "At Clackclose we take the awards very seriously and are proud of the youngsters."
Head at Hillcrest Mrs Linda Howling said: "The youngsters really value these certificates. They are proud to receive them."
Inaugurated by former Downham Mayor Mick Ford, the awards – aimed at local young people, individuals or groups deserving recognition – are supported by the Lynn News and and our sister paper, the Downham News, which will carry a picture special from the event.
Afterwards, the youngsters enjoyed a disco and refreshments.
