Baby appeal: Runners set next for cycle challenge
THE challenge has heightened but the cause has stayed the same for a group who are running (and cycling) their second effort for the Lynn News Special Care Baby Appeal.
Hilgay Football Club chairman John Vinson and a band of friends and family were due to run a half-marathon on Sunday and will also take on a mammoth bike ride of around 140 miles to generate sponsorship for the appeal.
Mr Vinson, of Hilgay, and some of the others taking part ran six miles and cycled close to 50 miles last summer to raise 500 for the appeal.
Mr Vinson said: "People often only do something for a charity when they need it or they do something once then forget about it. We think this is a really good cause."
One of those who took part last year, Grant Jeffries, of Stow Bridge, did so without the knowledge he would be touched by the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit the appeal supports. His son was cared for at the unit at Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital over Christmas after being born prematurely.
Mr Jeffries was among those joining Mr Vinson for the run and is also due to cycle again this year.
The half-marathon took place at Silverstone. Also taking part was Tom Brooke, of Hilgay.
The cycle ride, taking a route inspired by names of wards at the hospital, which include Denver, Necton and Terrington, will be on Saturday, April 4.
Mitchell Law, of Downham, and Stuart Bye, of March, will be joining the others for that. Mr Vinson's brother Matthew, of Ipswich, took part in the run only.
The Special Care Baby Appeal aims to raise 150,000 for a vital expansion and revamp of Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for ill and premature babies.
