Baby paddle Lynn sessions for weeks-old infants

BABIES as young as just a few weeks old will be making a splash and learning vital life-saving skills with the launch of new baby swimming lessons in Lynn.

The half-hourly classes, run by the UK's largest baby swim school, Water Babies, will be held at Gaywood's Alderman Jackson School on a weekly basis and aim to build youngsters' confidence in the water, teaching them to swim both on the surface and underwater.

As babies are born with a natural gag reflex, they instinctively hold their breath when their faces are submerged, but the reflex fades after six months so the swim school encourages parents to get youngsters swimming as early as possible.

Kim Bennett, who will run the new Lynn class, said: "When you consider that every movement babies make has a direct effect on strengthening their brain for new learning, you can see how swimming without constraints of gravity is so effective.

"It's also very special in that it's the only structured activity you can do with your newborn from birth.

"Just as important, with progressive training babies can be taught vital life-saving skills such as turning onto their backs or swimming to the nearest solid object following a sudden submersion," she added.

Classes started in Lynn on Friday from 9.30am. Interested parents can find out more by logging on to www.waterbabies .co.uk or calling Ms Bennett on 01603 763685.
