BAWSEY: Drain is unblocked in community clean up

Wildlife can flourish and flood defences remain effective after a clean-up effort in North Lynn which tackled the poor state of Bawsey Drain.
The drain and the footpath/cycleway which runs alongside it into town had become an area where fly-tipping, litter and dog-fouling were common.
A combined effort by West Norfolk Council, King’s Lynn Internal Drainage Board, Norfolk County Council, the Gaywood Valley Sustainable Urban Fringes (SURF) Project, the North Lynn Partnership and Highgate Infant School has transformed the area.
The drain, known locally as Clarke’s Drain, which is home to wildlife including ducks, moorhens and wildflowers, is being cleaned by the IDB. The work, due for completion towards the end of February, will also improve its effectiveness as a flood defence.
The council has installed bins for dog waste and Highgate pupils have produced posters encouraging people to respect the area. CCTV is in operation and the SURF project has installed information boards explaining the site’s importance.
Brian Long, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Litter doesn’t just make a place look awful. It can affect wildlife and hamper flood defences by restricting water flow.”
