Bells ring again at St Mary's

THE bells are set to ring again at St Mary's Church in East Rudham.

For many years the three bells in the tower at the parish church have been silent because of decay in the frame and fittings said rector, Father Edward Bundock. Last May an appeal was launched for their renovation, and to add three more bells from a church in Chilcompton, North Somerset.

The appeal was supported by local people and the Heritage Lottery Fund gave a grant of 20,000. The work is nearing completion and will be marked with a Hallowing of the Bells ceremony today at 11am.

"All six bells, garlanded with flowers, will be on display in the body of the church and will be blessed in a traditional manner," said Fr Bundock.

"Local schoolchildren will be able to touch and inspect the bells. This is a rare opportunity given that most bells are hidden away in dusty towers far from public view."

The first ringing of the bells will take place at a re-dedication service on Sunday, December 2.
