Bid to be next Billy Elliot

A YOUNG West Norfolk dancer is making his TV debut next week – in front of an audience of millions tuning in to watch the BAFTA Awards.

This year's glittering event, celebrating the best of British film and TV, was filmed in London on Sunday and young Aaron Watson put his dancing shoes on to join a special show marking the 60th anniversary of the awards.

Aaron (9), of Terrington St Clement, has been dancing with Lynn's Footlights school for two-and-a-half years and has made it through to the final auditions to be the next Billy Elliot on the West End stage.

He was picked to be part of the past, present and future of Billy Elliot – featuring dancers who have played the role and those yet to come.

The show is due to be screened by ITV on Wednesday evening.

His mum Karen said Aaron made it through to the final nine youngsters auditioning for the famous part and she then received a phone call asking if he could go to Leeds for another audition before being invited to take part in the big BAFTA birthday party.

"He has always wanted to be a dancer. He has been recalled for another audition on November 18 and we are hoping he will be chosen as the next Billy Elliot," said Mrs Watson.

He cannot take to the West End stage until he is 11, but there will be more than a year of intense training before he can take the role if his next audition is successful.

Mrs Watson added that the family, including Aaron's Dad Nick, sister Lisa (20) and brother Shaun (18) were grateful to Janet Neudick and Derek Girdlestone, who both run West Norfolk businesses, for their sponsorship and support.
