Bike paramedics rolled out in Lynn
PEDALLING paramedics will become a familiar sight around Lynn later this month when a new scheme is officially launched.
The service, which will provide an even quicker response to calls for medical attention, is being rolled out next Tuesday following a successful eight-day trial last summer.
It means paramedics will be able to reach many parts of town within just two minutes, and areas such as Gaywood, Hillington Square and North and South Lynn within eight minutes.
It also means patients can be treated quickly at the scene, saving the need for them to go to hospital, and ambulances will be freed up to attend more serious incidents.
The scheme will run three days a week until April, when it is hoped it can be extended to seven days a week.
Project co-ordinator, Hunstanton paramedic team leader Carl Smith, said one-off funding from the East of England Ambulance Trust and local companies of around 5,000 has been used to buy the bike, kit it out with basic equipment and train the four paramedics using it.
"We've got enough equipment to get out there and do a good job, but we still need more funding to buy specialist pieces of equipment such as you'd find in an ambulance but a lot smaller, and special clothing," he said.
He appealed for town centre businesses and companies to dig deep to help the scheme, and thanked Dow Chemical, Lynn Heart Group and Lynn Rotary Club for their support.
Anyone who would like to make a donation to the scheme can contact Mr Smith on 07753 691005.
