A church in Bircham Newton received a boost when a supermarket held a cooking demonstration to raise money for necessary repairs.

Sainsbury’s Try Team took their cookery skills to Drier Barn, part of a complex of cottages for the disabled in Bircham Newton, to help the village’s All Saints Church.

The 13th century church, one of the smallest in Norfolk, needs work on its masonry, drains and the re-tiling of the chancel roof. Ground level work includes restoring sinking floor memorial flagstones inside.

English Heritage has provided a grant of £61,000 towards the estimated total cost which is expected to exceed £112,000. The Norfolk Churches Trust has donated £5,000 and Ecclesiastical Insurance has provided £1,200 towards the repairs, but there is still a shortfall of around £48,000.

Sian Fox, of the Sainsbury’s Try Team, showed a packed audience how to live well for less with the Fair Trade and Freedom foods range as well as locally-sourced ingredients.

Church warden Michael Lancefield, pictured left, said: “The church is always looking for sponsors to help towards the cost, members of the congregation are already actively organising a wide range of future fundraising events.”
