Blot in my backyard, says Downham neighbour

A FORMER garage site can now be transformed into flats and bungalows despite a last-minute plea from a neighbouring resident that the development would be a "blot on the landscape".

West Norfolk's development control board followed officer recommendations to approve amended plans for the former Jim Russell garage site, in London Road, Downham, at a meeting in Lynn last Monday.

Developers will now be allowed to build 23 one and two-bedroomed flats in two and three storey blocks and eight two-bedroomed chalet bungalows on the site.

Resident Trevor Armstrong spoke at the meeting to appeal for the plan to be rejected, likening the block of flats to "monstrosities" of the '60s and saying they will be a blot on the landscape.

The proposals had been tweaked by applicant S Gibbs following concerns over a nearby mature oak tree and general look of the new buildings, leading council officers to recommend approval.
