Boost for Lynn as empty shops filled

A RE-SHUFFLE of shops in Lynn town centre could see three empty stores filled in the coming weeks.

The credit crunch lead to a number of vacant units springing up in the town, but there have been some newcomers already this year, including Madhouse Clothing and Chopstix restaurant, in Broad Street.

And there was more good news this week, with three empty premises set to reopen, including the former Mr Shoes store in the High Street.

Deck of Cards, based in Norfolk Street for nearly 23 years, is to open an additional branch filling the gap left by the shoe shop, next to Artertons', and bringing new jobs.

The new venture, due to open on Thursday, April 1, has created four full and parttime positions, with another existing employee taking on

full-time hours.

Owner Bernadette Chappell said: "We thought, while the recession is on, we could get a better deal on rent.

"Things are about to pick up, I'm sure, so if you are going to do something, now is the time.

"We will have regular stock, but also lots of new products, such as more high-quality silk flowers, homeware and novelty kitchenware."

The new store will also stock some items aimed at tourists, including china, as well as a wider range of gifts including candles, books and

jigsaw puzzles.

Wilkinson has applied for planning permission for advertising and signs at the former Woolworths store in New Conduit Street, which has been shut for 17 months.

The retailer, currently based in the High Street, was in final negotiations to take over the larger shop last month and contractors moved in yesterday.

It is thought the new Wilkinson store will be open in the early summer.

The planning application, including an illuminated sign, was submitted to West Norfolk Council earlier this month.

Also in New Conduit Street, the former Ethel Austin store is to re-open as The Proper Pound Shop, a chain which sells a range of items, including households goods, for 1.

The store, which sold value clothing, closed at the end of February after the chain went into administration.

International milkshake specialists Shakeaway are also set to open in the Vancouver Quarter, opposite Westgate department store. Woolworths was forced to close in November 2008 when the national company went

into administration.

No-one was available to comment at the Wilkinson Group.
