The British team of wounded soldiers took to Brancaster beach last weekend to begin training for a race to the South Pole, organised by national charity, Walking With the Wounded.

The Walking With the Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge will see teams of wounded servicemen and women from the UK, USA, Canda and Australia, embark upon what has been hailed as one of the most ambitious expeditions of modern times.

The expedition will take place under the patronage of Prince Harry later this year, in November and December, and the UK team chose Brancaster as a base for their first training session.

Fergus Williams, director of operations at the charity, said: “It was really nice to get the whole team together for the first time so we could start their training.

“They had a chance to get to know each other and we think it was a great success.”

The team is made up of Jason Wilkes, Michael Goody, Ibi Ali MC, Guy Disney and Norfolk-resident Duncan Slater who lost both legs in an IED blast in Afghanistan. They will also be joined by team guide Conrad Dickinson and team mentor Richard Eyre.

Mr Williams added: “We really needed to get them together so we could assess their injuries and how they would work around them for the expedition.

“It’s going to be a long, hard slog travelling across Antarctica and dragging the sledges, we really need to know that each of them will be physically able to drag the sledges.”

The team will now begin individual training before heading to Iceland on March 2 for the next instalment of group preparation.
