Brave Kane saves river jump dog
A relaxing evening stroll along Lynn's South Quay with his labradors, Guinness and Blake, suddenly turned into drama for owner Trevor Ward.
On a whim, 15-month-old Blake decided to jump the quay wall – and dropped 30 feet on to mud below.
Quick-thinking barman at nearby restaurant Bradleys, 20-year-old Kane Warren, climbed down a ladder alongside the quay in the pitch dark to rescue him, the tide rising at the time.
Miraculously, neither were the worse for their ideal – albeit cold and muddy.
The drama began while retired Mr Ward (58), on holiday in the Lynn area from York, was walking along the quayside at around 10pm on Thursday.
"I was distracted by a car and did not realise where Blake had gone," said Mr Ward who, to his horror, then looked over the side of the quay and, with the help of a torch acquired from a man nearby, realised a glint from below must be light shining back from the dog's eyes.
Friend Mrs Sue Lowe raised the alarm at Bradley's.
Mr Warren, from Tennyson Avenue, Lynn, told the Lynn News: "The dog was on a little patch of mud and the tide was rising.
"I took my shirt off and went down in my shoes and trousers."
Blake was "motionless" as Mr Warren took hold of him and, with the dog cradled in one hand, began to climb back up, a lifebuoy being thrown to him in case he slipped.
As he neared the top, the dog was taken from him and he scrambled to safety.
"It was a long way down," said Mr Warren who had to go home because his clothes were ruined by the rescue, which took 20 minutes.
The dog was hosed down at Bradleys – ironically itself named after a labrador dog – Mr Ward being extremely grateful for everyone's help.
Mr Ward, who has since given Mr Warren a small reward, added: "I would not have known what to do short of calling the fire brigade."
