Call for Marshland lollipop lady
THE headteacher at a Marshland primary school is appealing for a new lollipop lady – before one of his pupils is hurt on the busy road.
Mark Oldridge, headteacher at Clenchwarton Primary School, told the Lynn News he was "desperate" to find a replacement "lollipop person" to help youngsters to cross Main Road safely.
He said: "It is about two years since we had someone and we need somebody to help us. We have not had a serious injury outside the school but there are problems with drivers who are not prepared to stop and wait at the crossing.
"Cars are not travelling at 20 miles per hour and we are desperate to get somebody out there."
A safety day packed with activities was held at the school last Friday to help raise awareness of the vacancy and to teach children the importance of road safety.
The event, organised with the help of Norfolk Police and Terrington Safer Neighbourhood Team, saw PCSO Angela Tegerdine act as lollipop lady for the day.
Youngsters were also joined by Inspector Mick Bates to judge the best lollipop poster competition.
Mr Oldridge added: "It was very different when we had a patrol and cars were waiting.
"The children had a great day and they all designed adverts for a new lollipop person. We are publishing various posters in our newsletter to keep the campaign high profile."
The new crossing patrol would be required to work around two hours a day and a uniform and on-the-job training is provided. To find out more, call Ian Webb at Norfolk County Council on 01603 224489.
