Caring group steps in at Lynn

A NEW care group for people with eating disorders has been launched in Lynn to help fill a void of support for sufferers in West Norfolk.

The group is being run by a team of dedicated volunteers, including Alan Riddell (61), of Hunstanton, whose daughter has suffered from the devastating effects of anorexia.

Sessions are being held on alternate weeks in the strictest confidentiality and people will have the opportunity to meet those in a similar situation to discuss their problems and concerns.

Mr Riddell said: "Eating disorders have the highest death rate among people with mental health problems.

"We understand that it is difficult for those with an eating disorder and also extremely difficult for their friends and relatives, and want to help in any way we can.

"Anything that is discussed or said within the group is totally confidential and no judgement will be made."

The group is being supported by beat, an organisation campaigning against the stigma of eating disorders, and the Eating Disorders Association (EDA), which is helping to fund the venture.

Ms Joyce Armstrong (49), a day resource manager at the Mind centre in Heacham, is another who is offering her time as a volunteer with the group and believes it is something which is much-needed in the area.

She said: "There is a lack of support for people in West Norfolk who suffer from eating disorders. We are here for people who recognise they have a problem and help them with their recovery. We are here so they know they do not have to handle this on their own."

Mr Riddell has already helped to establish a support group for people caring for loved ones with eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating.

The new group will meet from 7pm to 9pm on alternate Mondays at Lynn's Piece of Mind centre, in Littleport Street, and is open to anyone above the age of 18.

For more information on both groups call Mr Riddell on 07867 662251.
