Cash Rolls in for Castle Acre's Anna

METAL sculptor Anna Rolls has been awarded a £2,000 scholarship to help develop her skills and expand her range of wildlife-inspired artworks.

The sculptor, who hails from Castle Acre, specialises in creating steel designs of birds from everyday objects such as keys and cutlery.

The money granted through the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) will enable her to add to her skills by studying for a postgraduate diploma in conservation and restoration of metalwork at West Dean College, West Sussex.

Miss Rolls (26, pictured right at work) studied three-dimensional crafts at the University of Brighton, where she learned about working with different materials and developed a love of sculpting in metal, using forging and welding techniques.

Inspiration for her work is drawn from a keen interest in wildlife, particularly birds, and for the past three years she has created sculptures that capture the form and characteristics of an individual species.

Miss Rolls said: "Many of the pieces are fine, delicate and in some ways more aligned with jewellery. I like to use pre-fabricated materials, producing humorous pieces by linking the subject to the objects they are made from. For example, geese would be made from cutlery and magpies from keys."

Once she has completed the course Anna hopes to expand her tools to encompass restoration work in a wide range of metals.

QEST is the charitable arm of the Royal Warrant Holders' Association and was established in 1990 to mark the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and the 150th anniversary of the founding of the association.

Trustees look for well thought-out projects which reflect the excellence of British craftsmanship.
