Celebrated respect for law test with drink, then drove
A SOUTH African man went out to celebrate passing a test to teach immigrants the moral and social fabric of British life – and got caught drink-driving on the way home.
One of the principle messages of the citizenship test that nursing home worker Dale Brown had just completed was the need for respect of the law.
To celebrate his success Brown (29) downed three to four pints of lager then got behind the wheel because his friend was too drunk to drive, Lynn Magistrates’ Court heard last Tuesday.
Brown, who is trying to secure permanent residence in the UK, was keen to get home because he had a shift early the next day, solicitor Mr Andrew Spence said.
The Government launched citizenship tests for foreigners who want a British passport in a wave of publicity in 2005. They require applicants to study British society, history and culture.
Brown, of 130 Hillington Square, Lynn, admitted drink-driving on August 25 and was given a 16-month ban, to be reduced by four months on successful completion of a drink-drive rehabilitation course, 270 fine and must pay a 15 victims’ surcharge.
Brown gave a reading of 67 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35.
