Chair we go...
Media student Michael Boardman (19) from King's Lynn is soon to attempt a 100 mile tour of North Norfolk on an office chair. Michael is a student at the College of West Anglia.
WHEN you consider the best ways to get around Norfolk, an office chair may be quite low on the list.
But that might change if Lynn student Michael Boardman achieves his aim of setting a new world record for the longest distance covered while sitting on the item of furniture.
Michael, 19, is now planning his preparations for the record attempt, which is set to take place in June and is hoped will raise thousands of pounds for the Norfolk Hospice Tapping House.
He said he had been inspired to take up the challenge after hearing that the longest distance covered by an office chair in a year was 7.2 miles.
He said he had thought he could beat the mark, adding that he had long held the ambition of setting such a record.
“I think everybody does. Some people will stumble across something.”
There is currently no official world record for the longest distance covered in an office chair.
But Michael, who is studying TV and film at the College of West Anglia, said he will have to cover a minimum of 100 miles for his effort to be recognised by Guinness World Records.
He is aiming to cover 110 miles, travelling at around three miles an hour along a route starting at the Lynn campus and going round the north Norfolk coast before heading towards Fakenham and back to Lynn.
The rules of the attempt state that the chair used must be commercially available and can only be moved with the legs.
Michael is planning to complete the route in four or five days over the weekend of his 20th birthday, beginning on Friday June 17.
A fundraising concert and auction is also planned at the end of the attempt.
Pledges of support and donations can be left on the “GWRA for longest distance traveled by office chair in aid of charity” Facebook page.
