Chance to plan for Marshland future

PEOPLE power could soon be the ruling force in a Marshland village where residents have the opportunity to shape the future of their parish.

A ten-strong steering committee has been formed to draft a parish plan for Marshland St James, which will take into account the ideas, hopes and opinions of local people and act as a blueprint for the way forward.

Residents will be able to bring to the fore the issues which matter most to them, such as affordable housing, road safety, public transport, facilities for young people and local environmental problems, including litter, fly-tipping and pollution.

The committee, chaired by West Norfolk councillor and resident David Markinson, will get the ball rolling with a series of meetings and public consultation before drawing up a questionaire, which will be hand delivered and collected from every home in the village.

Responses to the questionaire will form the baisis of the plan and the next step will be to prioritise the issues raised and decide how they should be tackled.

Cllr Markinson said: "This is something the people of Marshland will benefit from greatly. It will have immense importance and carry weight in regards to all future decision making, covering every aspect of life in this village.

"At last people will have their say on what will be the future of this parish. This exercise will take around a year to put into place but we are fortunate in having an excellent committee offering solid representation of the people who I know can be relied on to deliver a first-rate piece of work."

Parish plans were introduced by the Goverment to give rural citizens a voice and put the people who best know their area in charge.

All the plans drawn up around the country are different because they are developed by each community in response to its individual needs and concerns.

The questionnaires are expected to be delivered to all Marshland St James residents before Christmas.
