Chance to visit Clenchwarton secret

A SPECIAL get-together is being held in Clenchwarton on Sunday to raise awareness about one of its best-kept secrets – Marshland Maritime Museum.

The museum, housed in a building at Mike and Jo Smith's Main Road garden, has been refurbished with extra memorabilia and displays.

"Those attending on Sunday are members of the 'D Boats Association'," said Mr Smith, who was so keen to join the Navy in his youth that he lied about his age!

The association, he said, was for those who served on the Defender class in the Second World War and on the Daring class, 1950s/1960s destroyers.

On a recent holiday, Mr and Mrs Smith met Martin McClure, draw master for the BBC1's National Lottery.

He will be attending Sunday's event at which there will also be a bangers and mash lunch for invited guests, supplied by King's butchers of Lynn.

The main reason for the get together is to get more publicity for the museum, a project which was started by Mr and Mrs Smith three years ago.

Members of the public are welcome at the museum, which has more than 5,000 pieces of nautical nostalgia, if they first telephone Mr Smith to make an appointment. He can be contacted on 01553 765530.

There is no charge although there is a donation box should people wish to give.

The museum has already welcomed several visitors, including schoolchildren.
