Channel champ
WEST Norfolk woman Rose Levien has swum The Channel – after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
Former Fakenham High School pupil Miss Levien (26), pictured left, had to cross busy shipping lanes with large ships passing close by.
She was even stung by a jellyfish as she completed the swim, which took 13 hours and 22 minutes after she'd set off from Shakespeare Bay, a beach just west of Dover.
She also had to overcome sea sickness.
Her epic swim was the culmination of months of hard training in Dover harbour by Miss Levien who was born in Norwich, though brought up in Stibbard near Fakenham.
"At 9.45pm we were finally into shallow waters and the dinghy was lowered at the back of the boat," said her father, Charles. "It was the sight she had been longing for as she knew she had almost made it. We were immensely proud of her."
A major incentive behind the challenge has been Miss Levien's wish to raise funds for an orphanage in Zimbabwe. So far she has topped 3,000 but is aiming to make 5,000.
Anyone wanting to sponsor Miss Levien should send cheques made payable to One Width Challenge to her parents Charles and Judy Levien at Manor Farmhouse, Reepham Road, Foulsham, Norfolk NR20 5PP.
