Clean-up starting in South Lynn

THE successful campaign to clean-up parts of Lynn and encourage residents to take pride in where they live makes a welcome return today (Wednesday).

Representatives from the police, fire service, West Norfolk Council, the Improving Neighbourhoods board and other agencies will be focusing on South Lynn in a bid to make the area cleaner, greener and more welcoming.

Among the other work being carried out as part of Operation Civic Pride will be the removal and disposal of abandoned or unlicensed vehicles, tackling litter and fly-tipping, graffiti removal and bulb planting in communal areas.

The operation will concentrate on the areas surrounding Burney Road, Metcalf Crescent, Beloe Crescent and the adjoining alleyways.

PC Paul Smith, who is leading the initiative, said: "Operation Civic Pride is now a well-established project which encourages local people to get involved.

"It gives residents a sense of ownership, to have respect for where they live and the environment around them as well as taking pride in what they have achieved.

"It demonstrates the difference everyone can make when key stakeholders communicate effectively and come together for the benefit of the whole community."

Today's efforts will also see the launch of the Take Pride in Your Garden competition.

Residents will be able to enter their garden or street in the categories of most attractive back garden, most attractive front garden, tidiest garden and tidiest street.

Prizes will be available for both first place and runners-up and flyers will be posted through doors and will be available in any of the South Lynn shops with details of how to enter.

Neighbourhood manager Vicky Etheridge said: "Civic Pride is not just about agencies doing their bit, but is also about encouraging residents to take pride in where they live.

"I would encourage people to get involved in however they like. our garden competition should be great fun and will help to make the area look as nice as possible for the coming summer months."
