Countdown to West Norfolk Xmas begins
THE countdown to Christmas has begun in West Norfolk with lights, shopping and festive fun set to be better and brighter than ever before.
Each of the borough's towns has a packed programme of events, and all are set to sparkle when the Christmas lights are officially switched on from next Friday (23).
Thanks to an investment of around 70,000, Lynn and Hunstanton will benefit from new energy-efficient lights and Downham, having had new lights installed last year, will be equally as spectacular.
The fun begins in Lynn next Friday with a whole host of entertainment leading up to the opening of the ice-rink and the official lights switch-on in Tuesday Market Place at 6.30pm.
Santa and his real reindeer will be paying a visit and there will be street entertainment from Hunstanton's Princess Theatre pantomine queen and elves from 4pm.
There will also be a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk by young person's theatre group, Kult Theatre, in the market place and from 5pm there will be music from local band, Blues Tubes.
At 5pm, Santa and his reindeer, Borough Mayor Kathy Mellish and the official party will also be leaving Saturday Market Place to walk through the town with carol singing stops along the way. At 5.40pm the procession is due to reach Baxter's Plain for more carol singing, and there will be a snow machine to add to the atmosphere.
The parade will depart for Tuesday Market Place at 5.55pm ready for the official switch-on, which will be performed by Santa, the panto Queen and two lucky competition winners.
Santa's Grotto will open in the Vancouver Quarter after the switch-on and will remain open throughout the lead up to Christmas. The grotto comes complete with animated eskimos and polar bears and visitors can also go on a virtual sleigh ride.
The opening of the ice rink in Tuesday Market Place coincides with the switch-on and will be open between 4pm and 10pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10am to 10pm on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 10am to 8pm on Sundays until Sunday, January 6.
There will also be market stalls surrounding the rink and Thursdays and Fridays will be late-night shopping in the town centre during the run-up to Christmas.
Hunstanton will twinkle like never before when new custom-made lights are switched on by the Princess Theatre's pantomine dame at 4pm on Sunday, November 25, at the end of the High Street.
Shoppers will be entertained by the Hunstanton Concert Band between 2.30pm and 3.30pm on the day, and there will also be an appearance from Lynn Mini Owners' Club.
Children can also enjoy a visit to a Santa's Grotto at the Princess Theatre.
Downham gets lit up for Christmas when the town's official lights switch-on takes place in the town square. Borough Mayor Kathy Mellish will perform the ceremony at 4.15pm on Sunday, November 25.
Carol singers from local schools will be spreading cheer to shoppers throughout November and December and on St Andrew's Day, Friday, November 30, bagpipes will be playing in the town square.
Various markets will be visiting the town square and a craft and collectables market, organised by the town council, will be held between 9am and 3pm next Saturday and Sunday and Saturday, December 8. Shoppers can also sample continental delights at the Italian market in the town on Thursday, December 13.
