Crash victim died close to own home

A MAN was killed within minutes of his home in a crash on the notorious A47, leading to renewed calls for its full length to be made dual carriageway.

Police yesterday revealed the driver killed in the crash was 38-year-old Simon Freshwater-Sturgess, who lived in Narborough, close to where the collision happened.

South West Norfolk MP Christopher Fraser said: “Yet again the A47 is in the news for tragic reasons.

“I have said on many occasions that this road is one of the most dangerous in the region, and that investment is long overdue to address the shortcomings of our roads infrastructure locally. It must be dualled and the Government must find the money to make this possible.”

Mr Freshwater-Sturgess’s black Rover Metro and a blue Volkswagen panel van collided at around 6am on Wednesday on a single carriageway section of the road just south of Narborough and north of the junction with the A1122.

Fire crews from Swaffham and Massingham had to cut Mr Freshwater-Sturgess and the other driver – a 43-year-old man, who was taken to hospital with a slight injury to his shoulder – out of their vehicles following the crash.

The collision led to four hours of diversions for other motorists until the road reopened just before 10am.

The family were too upset to speak to the Lynn News, but his stepdaughter Charis Sharpe said: “He will be missed.”

l Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the manner of driving of either vehicle beforehand should contact PC Stephen Bodle at Western Area Road Policing at Swaffham Police Station on 0845 4564567.

l AN elderly pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after being hit by a car on the A10 at Tottenhill yesterday.

The collision happened at around 7.15am near the Dray and Horses pub in Tottenhill.

A 70-year-old man was taken to Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment and motorists faced long delays as the road was closed with diversions put in place via Setchey and Stradsett.

The road was re-opened at 9.50am.
