Crashed head-on when overtaking

CARELESS driver Michael Wallace collided head-on with another car while speeding and overtaking, Lynn magistrates heard on Monday.

Wallace (24), of 125 Station Road South, Walpole St Andrew, admitted driving without due care and attention. He previously appeared before the magistrates in March when sentencing was deferred for six months on condition that he did not re-offend or breach a suspended sentence.

After hearing he had complied with the conditions, the magistrates fined Wallace 360, banned him from driving for 28 days and imposed 105 costs.

Joe Ghirardello, prosecuting, said the accident happened in Clenchwarton Road, West Lynn, in April last year. Witnesses described Wallace's car overtaking at high speed near a junction and hitting a car on the opposite side of the road.

One witness said he was amazed no-one died.

The driver of the other car, Jake King, suffered from whiplash and his passenger, Kelly Cainey, was detained in hospital for three nights with pelvic injuries, said Mr Ghirardello.

Alison Muir, for Wallace, said her client was also injured and hospitalised and could remember very little about the accident.

“He is remorseful that other people were hurt. He appreciates how careful he has to be as a driver to safeguard himself and other road users. He has had the chance to reflect and become a far more mature young man,” said Miss Muir.

Wallace was extremely proud to have become a father. He took his responsibilities seriously and was working hard as a scaffolder, supporting his family and keeping out of trouble. He had learned his lesson and was “a million miles removed” from the driver who committed the offence, she added.
