Death of former Gaywood head
ALFRED Chadwick, headmaster of the former Alderman Catleugh Boys' School in Gaywood, now Springwood High, has died aged 92.
A thanksgiving service for his life is to be held at St Faith's Church in Gaywood next Friday at noon.
Great-grandfather Mr Chadwick, of Windermere Road, South Wootton, died at Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday after a short illness.
He was a teacher in Yorkshire before joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, as a weather forecaster, and in the Second World War saw service in North Africa and Italy.
Mr Chadwick returned to teaching after the war and gained his first headship in Leeds. He came to this area in 1957 as the first – and only – headmaster of the new Alderman Catleugh Secondary School for Boys.
He sang with Lynn Male Voice Choir for 30 years and in 1983 joined Lynn Rural Probus Club, for retired professional and businessmen, becoming its president in 1987.
His first wife, Anne, died in 1982 and he married Beryl in 1984. As well as the widow, he leaves a daughter Eileen, son John, stepchildren Judy and Pam, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
