Diamond helpers for diamond year at Oxfam
LYNN is helping mark the 60th anniversary of the opening of Oxfam's first charity shop with a call for donations of jewellery and "diamond" volunteers.
The first ever charity shop – the Famine Relief Gift Shop – was opened in 1948. Today, Oxfam's network of 730 shops, including the one at 120 High Street, Lynn, have raised more than 500 million for the charity's work fighting poverty around the world.
Lynn shop manager Ms Jane Haskins said the Lynn shop was pleased to help celebrate the milestone.
"Donations of unwanted jewellery would help us celebrate this special anniversary with sparkle and help to raise money for the people who need it most, including those affected by the recent cyclone in Myanmar, Burma," she said.
"Oxfam has raised money to help tackle global poverty through unusual and high value donations. For example, a diamond pendant and diamond ring raised more than 5,000 each at auction recently," said Ms Haskins. Even broken jewellery was acceptable.
Volunteers are also needed. "The real diamonds in our shop are the volunteers so, as part of Volunteers' Week ( Sunday, June 1, to Saturday, June 7), we are calling for more people to donate their time and work with Oxfam," said Ms Haskins.
"They are central to the success of our shops and it's rewarding and fun for them too."
Anyone wanting to find out more about voluntary work at Oxfam can ring the shop on 01553 773400.
