Diggers start big revamp at Lynn roundabout

WORK has begun on removing traffic islands on the five approach roads to Lynn's Southgates roundabout in the first stage of a £1.8m improvement scheme.

The seven-month project began just over a week ago, with mechanical diggers moving in to tempoarily reduce the size of the roundabout's central island by almost ten feet to allow more room for traffic as the works progress,

Last week, street lights, bollards and signs on the traffic islands on the approach roads were removed and temporary street lights fitted to the remainder of the central island.

Project engineer Quentin Brogdale said: "The islands are now being broken out and reinstated with surfacing and pedestrian refuges will be formed using barriers to allow people to cross and to give flexibility.

"Pedestrian routes are affected during this work and we apologise for any inconvenience while new crossing points are established."

This week should also see British Telecom diversion works begin at Wisbech Road, where trial holes have shown that the existing ducts need urgent attention.

One lane from Wisbech Road into the roundabout junction has been closed until tomorrow.

Ducts will also be laid across London Road, using lane closures in the quietest direction depending on the time of day.

Road widening will be starting in Hardwick Road this week – but away from the existing road line so traffic should not be affected. Mr Brogdale said works on Sundays will generally be daytime rather than

afternoon or evening shifts.
