Dog attack: 'Could have led to death'
A TOURIST suffered horrific leg injuries after he was attacked by an Alsatian dog while visiting relatives at a Snettisham caravan park.
The 31-year-old from Bedfordshire, who was staying at Diglea Caravan Park, on Beach Road, was taken to the Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital for urgent surgery on Wednesday after the dog bit his lower left leg down to the bone.
A police spokesman said the male dog has since been taken by its owner to be destroyed.
Officers are now investigating an offence against the female owner of keeping a dangerous dog in a public place and a file is due to be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for consideration.
Park manager Steve Chapman said the man and his wife had been visiting relatives who were staying in a touring caravan.
It is believed that a woman, who was staying at the site, asked to borrow a can opener and when the man approached her tent he was attacked by the dog.
Mr Chapman said: "He shouted 'hello' outside the tent and as he walked towards the windbreak the dog came outside and attacked him.
"If that was a child I am sure we would have had a death on our hands. The wound in the leg was quite large and went down to the bone. He had a huge chunk taken out of his leg.
"We have not really had anything like this happen on site before. This woman has been here on and off throughout the summer and the dog, in my eyes, is quite nasty.
"This is not ideal and I am not very happy at all. We will now have to wait to see what the police do."
Mr Chapman said the park has enjoyed a busy summer season but the camping area, where the woman had been staying, is now nearly empty.
She has not returned to the park since the attack.
Mr Chapman said that guests have to obey strict rules regarding keeping dogs on site which state they have to be kept on a lead and under control at all times.
