Dog ban moving round coast?

A BEACH ban on dogs could continue around the coast if pet owners do not start behaving more responsible.

Dogs could be be banned from Old Hunstanton and Holme beaches if owners do not start clearing up after their pets, it has been warned.

Agents working for Le Strange Estate told the Lynn News there has been an increase in the number of irresponsible dog walkers using the beaches since Hunstanton bathing beach was closed to them at the beginning of this month and tough action will be taken if they do not change their ways.

The warning comes despite disputed claims the bathing beach ban is not being enforced.

Agents Cruso and Wilkin, said: "Unless this is rectified the estate could find itself in a position where it will have no alternative but to follow the example set by the borough council and restrict access to the beach by members of the public with dogs."

West Norfolk Council introduced a ban closing off the bathing beach at Hunstanton to dogs and ordering them to be kept on a lead on the adjoining promenade from the beginning of February.

It means the risk of a 75 fixed penalty or prosecution and fine of up to 1,000 for dog owners who do not comply.

Pet owner Mrs Dawn Lee (36), who spoke out against the Hunstanton beach ban, said: "It's very frustrating."

The ban has prohibited responsible mum-of-one Mrs Lee from walking her black Labrador Monty on the beach nearest her home in Seagate Road, Hunstanton, though she claims many are flouting the new rules.

She has urged other dog owners to start picking up after their pets to avoid the restrictions being extended to Old Hunstanton.

Old Hunstanton Parish Council chairman Roger Hoverd said: "We would ask people to use the beach, not abuse it."

West Norfolk Council cabinet member for environment Brian Long said enforcement officers are patrolling the bathing beach in Hunstanton to inform owners of the new rules and fixed penalty notices will soon be issued to anyone flouting them.
