Dog dirt ruins Lynn children's day out

A TEACHER at a special needs school in Lynn has hit out at irresponsible dog owners after dog fouling in Dersingham ruined a children's day out.

Pupils at Fairstead's Ethel Tipple School were taken for a walk at Dersingham Common to look at nature, but all they could do was watch where they stepped.

Teachers were shocked at the amount of dog fouling and had to spend the rest of the afternoon cleaning up excrement trodden on to buses and back into the school.

"We went to the common as we knew it was well-drained and free from excess water so the children wouldn't get wet and muddy," said teacher Anne Anderson.

"Unfortunately it wasn't free from a great excess of dog excrement. Our pupils had been asked to look for signs of spring, instead they were on constant poo alert for the duration of the walk. Even with considerable vigilance, poo came back to school, on the buses and into the building. It was very distressing."

"For the first time after our weekly walk I found myself wishing we had stayed inside at school," she said after last Wednesday's outing. "Our party was angered by anti-social behaviour on such a grand scale. It was the worst we had ever seen."

Mrs Anderson, a dog owner herself, said responsible dog owners should clear up after their pets and use bins like those provided in Dersingham Common.

"If owners can't pick up their dog's excrement, they shouldn't own a dog," she said. "It's not a very nice thing to do, but if you've got a dog that's what you have to do. I wonder if the people concerned would like the same situation in their own gardens?"

She said the incident has put the school off going there again, and appealed for anyone who could suggest clean and interesting walks for the children to get in touch with the school on 01553 763679.
