Don't be duped by scam, says Lynn man
LYNN pensioner Pat English is warning others to be on their guard after he received what appeared to be notification through the post that he had won more than £2 million.
But, when he read further, he would have to send 20 to get it.
Mr English (79) was at home in Edinburgh Avenue with wife, Evelyn (77), when the correspondence addressed to him arrived on January 3.
The letter, which had apparently come from Florida, tells Mr English "you are officially sworn to secrecy", the letter contents were "absolutely confidential" and that he must "tell nobody".
Mr English was told he was entitled to 2,249,366. He was asked, however, to sign and return a privileged privacy rights contract document and also send a report-release fee of 20 payable by cash, cheque or postal order.
"I am a little bit concerned because there are lots of elderly people out there," said Mr English, who did not reply to the correspondence but brought it to the Lynn News instead.
Enclosed was an envelope addressed to the European Bureau of Prize Draw Registry at Emborough, Somerset, in the UK.
But, as Mr English pointed out, he would have to provide his own stamp.
A spokesman for Trading Standards in Norfolk said: "Our advice is that genuine prizewinners do not have to pay fees to collect their prizes.
"We tell consumers that if it seems 'too good to be true' then it probably is."
