Door closes on a piece of Brancaster's history

THIS was the moment the door was closed on Brancaster Methodist Chapel for the last time after falling congregation numbers made it unviable – ending 145 years of tradition.

The chapel had struggled to attract more than half-a-dozen people to services over the past decade or so and in recent years numbers have dwindled even further.

The London Street chapel opened in 1864 and talks over the building’s future are now ongoing, but it looks likely to end up in the hands of private developers.

The Rev Kim Nally said: “It is very, very sad and we understand the love and commitment people have put into the building for goodness knows how many years but it couldn’t go on in the present circumstances.

“This is happening in almost every community, particularly in rural areas.”
