Downham: Bling-blong, clip-clop to the fair
THE most bling-tastic event Downham holds is surely its annual St Winnold's Fair and next month's, on Friday, March 20, is certainly worth a look.
The parade, led by a shire horse and jaunting cart and brimming with bejewelled civic dignitaries, town criers and mace bearers, leaves the town council offices in Paradise Road at 9am to march across The Hollies – which will this year be lined with local school children waving their home-made horseshoes.
Then the procession heads up Bridge Street to the town hall steps for a short blessing.
At 9.30am the Town Mayor's invited civic guests, many of whom regularly travel from far and wide to support and enjoy this respected event, will join him in the town hall for breakfast.
In the evening the Mayor is also hosting an Olde English Supper with live entertainment in the town hall to which all are welcome. Tickets for this part of the St Winnold's celebrations cost 10 each and are available from Lewks.
n Due to contradictory bookings the Heritage Society meeting scheduled to take place in the town hall on Wednesday, February 18, will now take place at the Methodist Church hall instead.
Guest speaker Patrick Thompson will be giving a talk entitled Catering the Royal Way. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and all are welcome.
n Finally, the production was Sleeping Beauty but it's obvious that during the past year Downham Amateur Dramatic Society (DADS) has been wide awake improving almost every aspect of its annual panto extravaganza.
Everything that was wrong about it last year had this year been put right.
Sets were abundant, big and bold; individual scenes were succinct and tight, holding audience attention; costumes appeared tailor-made, visually appropriate; loud, modern music excited the audience to jig and sing along.
Those actors who could belt out a solo tune projected one to the back of the hall with gusto and, thankfully, those who could not were this year spared the sheer embarrassment.
The lighting and sound effects thrilled, the young dancers captivated, and the humour and audience participation weaved abundantly throughout.
Someone somewhere has been waving a magic wand. The DADS panto standard has now been spellbindingly re-set.
