Downham homes plans still in balance
NO decisions were taken by council planners on two controversial plans for a total of 113 new homes in Downham at a meeting on Tuesday.
West Norfolk Council's development control board considered one plan to build 78 new social rented and shared-equity homes in four areas of the Broadlands estate in the north east of the town – but deferred a decision for a site visit to be arranged.
Persimmon Homes wants to build the affordable homes on the land at Landseer Drive, Linseed Walk, Coriander Way, Nutmeg Walk and Basil Drive to meet what an officers' report said was a "great need for these homes".
Board members also looked at a scheme for 27 flats and eight chalet bungalows on the former Jim Russell garage site in London Road. But as a revised set of plans had been put before the council at short notice, the application was sent back for consultation before a decision is taken.
As reported in Tuesday's Lynn News, council officers had recommended both plans for approval despite 70 letters of objection to the Broadlands estate expansion and 19 objectors to the Jim Russell site, including Downham Town Council in both cases. It is concerned the town's doctors and schools cannot cope with the influx of new residents.
At the same meeting, a revised scheme to build a 50-bed care home along with 21 close-care bungalows at Manor Road, North Wootton, was refused, as recommended by officers.
The Avery Healthcare application was turned down because it falls within the North Norfolk Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and failed to satisfy the planning authority that the development would be in keeping with, and sensitive to, its location.
