DOWNHAM MARKET: Cut off his electronic tag

An offender who cut off his electronic tag told magistrates he had made a stupid mistake.

Michael Hughes, 39, of Sandringham Drive, Downham, admitted breaching a community order by tampering with the tag when he appeared before West Norfolk magistrates on Tuesday.

The court revoked the original order and sentenced him to a new 12 month community order with 120 hours’ unpaid work.

Eric Notton, prosecuting, said officers visited Hughes’ home on January 15 to speak to him about the tag. He said he was experiencing family problems and had been drinking and was not thinking properly before cutting the tag off.

Hughes asked the court to re-sentence him. He said the tag was hindering him, particularly where seeing his children and work were concerned.

He was very willing to undertake unpaid work to benefit others.

“I realise I made a stupid mistake cutting the tag off,” he said.
