DOWNHAM MARKET: Sex offender is jailed for 15 years

A sex offender from Downham was jailed for 15 years yesterday at Norwich Crown Court after being found guilty of rape and other offences against children.

As he put 39-year-old Darren Wooller, of Railway Road, Downham, behind bars Judge Mark Lucraft branded him as “thoroughly unpleasant” and “a bully”.

He told him : “From the evidence, you set out to take advantage of these children.

He added: “All six children gave evidence and set out a catalogue of abuse by you.”

Wooller returned to the court for sentencing after being convicted at the end of a 16 day trial last month. It took the jury 14 hours of deliberation to return majority verdicts against Wooller on all counts.

The offences took place on youngsters, then aged five to 11, between May 2004 and February 2009 at various locations including a caravan in Skegness.

Wooller had pleaded not guilty to the rape and nine sex attacks, and claimed that none of the alleged incidents had taken place.

He claimed he was the victim of a conspiracy by some of the people said to be involved. .

However, he was found guilty by a majority of 10-2 of raping one girl aged ten and by 11-1 on the other charges of sexual assault.

The offences were committed against four girls and two boys.

He was sentenced to 15 years for the rape and given concurrent sentences for the other offences.

Judge Lucraft also made an order banning Wooller from having unsupervised contact with children under 16 and working with children and young people. He will also be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.

Wooller’s counsel, Charles Langley told the judge his client maintained he was innocent.
