Education minister Elizabeth Truss watched Downham College students getting hands-on experience of a Nobel Prize-winning science programme when she visited Downham College on Friday.

The South West Norfolk MP, pictured above with biology student Michaela Wiseman, saw the Amgen Bruce Wallace molecular biology programme, devised by four Nobel Prize winners, being put into practice in the school lab.

Teachers and technicians from the high school and college were given training by Norfolk’s Teacher Scientist Network at the John Innes Centre in Norwich last summer. Now students are getting access to £50,000-plus of laboratory resources.

Dr Phil Smith, coordinator of TSN, said this educational outreach project was providing equipment, curriculum assistance and supplies to 10 high schools and colleges in Norfolk.
