A family has thanked officials from the Downham Stroke Support Group for the help they gave to a well-known hairdresser before his death earlier this year.

A total of £1,039 was raised for the group in a collection held at the funeral of John Davy in January.

And his widow Carol, pictured left, and son Justin presented the cheque Tracey Gotheridge, right, from the support group and Gemma Smith, representing the Stroke Association.

Mrs Davy said her husband had been a member of the group after he himself suffered a stroke. He had been retired for around three years before his death, following his illness.

She said the group’s activities, such as keep fit exercises, were important both to him and his family.

“We thoroughly enjoyed it”, she said.

The money is set to be used to purchase new equipment for the group, which meets at the headquarters of the Downham Christian Fellowship in Sovereign Way on Wednesday afternoons at 1pm.
