Downham: Out with old and in with new
Continuing last week's theme of out with the old and in with the new, here are some more changes and proposals that may affect you.
During the town's regeneration, we gleaned an unsightly water pump monolith type thing in the middle of the Town Square. Some people are now of the opinion it actually serves no good purpose and that its position blocks the way for better use for other activities on the square. An official proposal is being put to remove it.
Last weekend I took my grandson up to The Howdale, fully expecting, as I'm sure some of you did too, to find the two new pieces of play equipment raring to go.
Good news is that the one for under 10s was and is but the teen one (at the time of writing) is yet to be finished. Delays with various electrical works also mean the opening date of the (refurbished) toilet block on the Howdale is now planned for early March.
Final opening and closing times are yet to be decided but early suggestion is from 8am-6pm, seven days a week, possibly longer in summer. The opening times of the public toilets on the town hall car park are also under scrutiny.
Ongoing discussions to introduce car parking charges into Downham reveal that a set up sum of 27,000 is required. Historically, long discussions to install CCTV in Downham have now been deferred for 12 months because of cost.
A survey on the town hall has unexpectedly revealed that the bell tower of the building is in a dangerous condition and repairs to it may cost up to 25,000. These were not budgeted for in the original transaction.
Town council representatives attending Sports Federation meetings are still hoping to get the town's sports facilities improved and have expressed the view to the Federation that local facilities and issues should be extended to provide a much wider range.
This year's water festival will be even bigger and have four dragon boats. The event, which began two years ago, continues to grow in stature to provide a great free, family day out.
If you're one of those individuals or groups organising an event for this year's festival a reminder that to guarantee inclusion in the official programme, the deadline for written details to the committee is Friday, February 6.
For more information, contact Carol Williams on 01366 388709 or email carolfestival@aol.com Any details received after the deadline will miss the programme.
Tickets are now on sale for the annual Royal British Legion dinner. Entertainment will be provided by singer Hayley Moyses and speaker Rosemary Jacobs whose talk 'The Experience of a Corset Consultant' not only sounds intriguing but is being billed as hilarious.
To book, contact Horace Cross on 01366 387660. This year, by way of reducing costs, menu choice will be ordered in advance. Tickets for the event on April 18 will cost (about) 14.50.
Finally, this Sunday, January 25, the civic service will be held at St. Edmund's Church at 2.30pm. After the service a procession, led by the drum corps, will include various dignitaries and representatives of local groups, who will march past the Memorial area, along High Street south and on to the Town Square.
Following a blessing refreshments will be served in the town hall. Policed traffic restrictions (and diversions) will be in place for part of the afternoon.
