Downham's Richard puts heart into race
DOWNHAM runner Richard Hammond will be helping to raise money for the British Heart Foundation when he makes his London Marathon debut this year.
Mr Hammond, of Bridge Road, decided to support the charity after its tireless efforts ensured his niece Georgia Newman (7) received the best possible care when she was born with holes in her heart.
He started training for the gruelling 26-mile challenge last year and hopes to raise more than 1,500.
Mr Hammond, who runs Anglian Bin Cleaning with wife Justeene, told the Lynn News: "My niece was born with eight holes in her heart and the first two years were pretty tough as she needed two open heart operations.
"But the work of the British Heart Foundation meant she was slowly able to get better. She will always have to be careful, but she is doing really well.
"I started training last year with the normal January resolution of losing weight.
"My wife said 'why not set a goal?', so I applied for the marathon through the British Heart Foundation."
