Drawn to Swaffham Egyptian activities
HALF-TERM activities at Swaffham Museum last week gave both children and adults the chance to take part in artist-led events on an Ancient Egypt theme.
Ugandan artist Peter Sek and his wife, Gill, an art specialist and teacher, took sessions on the Tuesday and the following day Norfolk-based artist Liz Lampard led the way as participants produced a series of decorative panels based on Egyptian artefacts.
The events tied in with the Campaign for Drawing's annual showpiece, The Big Draw, and museum education officer Elaine Brown said: "Everyone had a really good time and the children impressed with the standard of work they produced."
Sessions on the first day included "Walk like an Egyptian", providing the chance to make elaborate Egyptian headdresses based on gods whose images could be seen in the museum collection, and copying hieroglyphs onto jars.
The Essence of Egypt sessions on the second day involved producing friezes of Egyptian images on 7ft sheets of paper. Ms Brown said there were some very impressive pieces of work and one panel was done entirely by a seven-year-old girl.
"These works are currently on display in the Carter corridor," she said.
Ms Brown said many of the participants dropped in on the sessions while visiting the museum and ended up staying a whole morning or afternoon. "We had very good feedback about it and it's something we would think about doing again," she said.
Anyone interested in being put on a mailing list to be notified about future events should email education@swaffham museum.co.uk or contact the museum on 01760 721230.
