Drink-driver asked police for directions

Driver Marak Konrad made a fatal error when he lost his way after drinking, Lynn magistrates heard yesterday.

Crown Prosecutor Kevin Eastwick explained to the court: "If you have been drinking and driving and you get lost, don't ask a police officer the way."

Konrad (20), of 60 Methuen Avenue, Gaywood, was caught with nearly twice the legal amount of alcohol on his breath on January 1. He admitted the offence and was banned from driving for 16 months, fined 260 and ordered to pay 55 costs.

Mr Eastwick said a police officer saw Konrad's car parked at the side of Bawsey Road, Lynn, at 2am. He went to investigate and Konrad asked him for directions. He suspected Konrad had been drinking and a breath test showed 62 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

John McWhirter, for Konrad, said his client was a single man from Slovakia who had been in the UK for two years and was living in private rented accommodation. "He has led a blemish-free life, holds down a full-time job and has never come to the attention of the authorities before," said Mr McWhirter.

Konrad, driving his father's car, and two friends had been looking for a party when they lost their way near Mintlyn Crematorium.

"He was utterly compliant and very pleasant to deal with at the police station," added Mr McWhirter.
