Drunk left mum with eight pelvic fractures
A HIT-and-run drunken driver who left a mother and son severely injured was on Tuesday jailed for a total of 17 months.
Timothy Wise (22), of The Beeches, Rosemary Lane, Gayton, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court after admitting drink-driving, dangerous driving and failing to stop after the accident, which happened last October on the A47 near Middleton. He was also banned from driving for three years and ordered to take an extended test before driving again.
Lori Tucker, prosecuting, told the court the victims, Sarah Hall (32), and her son, James (16), were walking home in the early hours of October 14 when they were struck from behind by Wise's Peugeot 106.
Mrs Hall had been out for the evening in Lynn with her friend Michelle Reeve. They had been unable to get a taxi and started walking home to Middleton. Mrs Hall phoned her son because her boots were uncomfortable. James and a friend, both on cycles, took her a pair of comfortable shoes, said Mrs Tucker.
All four were walking in crocodile formation along the road, getting on the grass verge when cars approached. At the Fair Green junction they heard a car from behind and Mrs Hall and James were hit some time between 3am and 3.45am, she continued.
Mrs Hall's pelvis was fractured in eight places and seven of the fractures had to be repaired with plates and screws. She also suffered stomach and leg injuries. James suffered a head injury which has resulted in mood swings and loss of memory.
About two hours later, at 5.50am at East Winch, Wise was found either asleep or unconscious in his car by a delivery driver. His lights were still on and he had an injury to his face. A breath test later showed 75 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35. When questioned, Wise said he could not remember anything about the accident.
Simon Gladwell, for Wise, said: "He is a man of previous good character. Since the accident he has not driven again. This was an act of stupidity. He did not plan to drive after a night out in Lynn. He is genuinely sorry and has not drunk any alcohol since."
Wise told police he had drunk some vodka and orange. He was extremely drunk and was going to stay the night at a friend's but then decided to drive home, said Mr Gladwell.
Sentencing Wise, Judge Simon Barham said: "It is plain that you were drunk at the time and drove dangerously."
