EAST WINCH: Half marathon challenge for my ‘warrior’ mum

A runner from East Winch is planning to take on a half-marathon for the second time later this month to raise money for Addenbrooke’s Hospital in memory of his mother.
Edward Patterson, 35, has set himself the challenge of completing Great Yarmouth’s Fritton Lake Cross Country Half Marathon on behalf of the hospital as a thanks for taking care of his mother before her death on Christmas Day.
He said: “My dear mother, who had been a warrior all her life, was first admitted to Addenbrookes Hospital in the 70s with a blood clot that had formed on her brain.
“Shortly after she fell into a coma for just over a week then woke up unaware of who she was and had to learn everything all over again. A stroke left her epileptic and over the years she had falls breaking her hips and shoulder.
“However despite all these tragic events my mum never cried, never complained, and always held her head high, and it’s because of Addenbrooke’s Hospital my mum was able to live a reasonable life of fun, laughter and televison.”
Mr Patterson, who works as a network technician, has been a keen runner since he was 15-years-old when it helped him quit smoking.
He said: “Currently, I’m training seven days a week and it’s going very well, I’m running five days on an indoor treadmill and at the weekend I will go for an outside 10-15 miles cross country.”
He took part in the half-marathon last year but running on an injury meant he was forced into physiotherapy and to stop training for some time.
He added: “I am looking forward to the half marathon because this will be the second time I have ran this track, but this time I am coming back stronger and faster than before.
“I wish to continue fundraising and helping people as much as I can, last year when I ran the Fritton Lake for the first time I raised just under £500 for Hana’s Gift charity, my target is £1,000 for Addenbrooke’s, but if I get near the £500 mark I will be happy.
“My mother would be very proud, she donated to last year’s event, and so are the rest of my family.”
Mr Patterson will be running on Sunday, March 17, and to sponsor him, go to www.justgiving.com/MrEdAthon
